"...you can't tell me what to do...she's mine first."

The tension rose between the two boys.

For a moment, the second boy's expressionless face broke.  "That's right.  Everyone knows that.  But let me tell you this, I—."

The party was similar to a JS prom but what made it different was that the whole student body was required to go.  The lights were dimmed to a certain extent and different colored lights were dancing around the room.  There were different kinds of music that were played.  A little bit of jazz here and classical there.   Some party songs meant for real parties and some romantic songs for couples.  Any genre you could think of was playing.  This was the kind of school events that most students loved—except for a few.

Lukas was one of those few but he was forced to go anyway.  He was with his usual groupMatthias, Tino, Berwald, and his little brother Emil.  But even they didn't give much companionship.  They all had dates to the party.  That in itself was unusual.  Lukas would have forbidden Emil to get a date, or would have at least made it difficult for him to get one.  Anybody who knew him knows that Lukas would never let a girl get close to his little brother.  It was a complex they've noticed.

Another unusual thing was that Lukas himself didn't have a date.  Everyone expected him to have one.  He always had one at such parties.  Though it was mostly set-ups made by his annoying friend Matthias.  The others were times when a brave girl had the courage to ask him out.  In those occasions, it wasn't even Lukas who said 'yes' but it was Matthias who answered them for him.

There was an hour left into the party and Lukas leaned against a wallalone.  He wore that same blank expression but on a closer look, his mind was somewhere else.

"Hey, Lukas! Lukas! Hey, snap out of it! Lukas!"

Lukas felt somebody shake him.  He focused his eyes on the person in front of him.  It was (y/n).

"What do you want?" He says with that icy-voice of his.

(Y/n) placed her hands on her hips.  "Now that's some way to speak to a close friend." She relaxed and shrugged her shoulder.  "But then again, when have you not talked to me like that?"

    Lukas didn't comment.

"So how do I look?" (Y/n) smiled, making a twirl in her (f/c), slim and fitted gown.

She was gorgeous.  The gown did a good job in accentuating her hidden beauty but Lukas wouldn't admit that.  No, it was not his role to say it.  "So-so," he said.

(Y/n) pouted.  "Well, I guess it's better than your comments before.  So where's your date?"

    "Don't have one," Lukas replied.

"What?  That's terrible.  You always have a partner to these parties.  Even Emil has one."

"Well, things are different this time."

    "And why is that?"

Lukas kept quiet.  He knew better than to answer that question.  It was because of her that he didn't even want to be at that school party in the first place.

(Y/n) sighed.  "Can't you at least find somebody to dance with?  Even just one song?"

He couldn't even if he tried.  Not if that person was an exact replica of the person standing right in front of him.

A few seconds later, someone came up to (y/n) and hugged her from behind.  (Y/n) yelped, obviously taken by surprise. "Hey beautiful," the guy said.

The girl turned with a wide grin on her face.  Lukas knew what was going to happen next and looked away as (y/n) and the boy kissed.

"How about a last dance before going home?" He asked.

"Sure," (y/n) said, silently being lead to the dance floor.  She looked back to Lukas and mouthed the words.  "Find a partner and enjoy a dance."

Lukas sighed.  That was going to be impossible.

"You've always loved her, so why didn't you tell her?"

It wasn't long before a few people nearby could hear choking sounds.

    "Butit'strue," Matthias choked.

Lukas stopped and let go of his annoying friend's necktie.  "It's none of your business."

"It's every part of my business," Matthias said.  He took a few moments to fix his tie before going on.  "We're best of friends, aren't we?"

    No answer.

Matthias sighs.  "If you think I haven't noticed, then you're wrong.  I know what's eating you up right now.  You've been looking at her the whole night—," he pauses.  "—even until now."

Their eyes focus on one couple on the dance floor.  It even so happened that a slow love song was playing.

An almost inaudible and involuntary sigh escape Lukas' lips.  He remembered (y/n)'s request for him to find a dance partner.  It wasn't that it was impossible.  It was that it was hopeless.  The only person he could ever have wanted to be an escort to this school party was (y/n).  But she already had an escort—her 8-month boyfriend, (b/n).  Yup, the guy she kissed right in front of him, like he wasn't even there.  Even now as they danced to the song, it looked like it was only the two of them in the area.

"You had more than a single chance to tell her, you know," Matthias said.

"Shut up," Lukas said, but he couldn’t deny that he did miss his chance.  It was the main reason why he did not want to go this event.  To see the person you love be in love with someone else took guts.  He used to think that he would be able to get over it as time passed but the ache didn’t go away.  It lingered every single time he saw them together.  The worse part was that if she wasn’t with her boyfriend, she’d mostly hang out with him.  The worst part was that she’d be coming to him for advice on her boyfriend.  They had a fight about that but (y/n) was quick to apologize.  Still, it didn't change the fact that Lukas was hurt.

From what Lukas had seen in her boyfriend was the ideal boyfriend she ever wanted—the kind and sweet type of guy.  So far, (b/n) has only been that.  Everybody who saw knew that they were a perfect match.

And he—Lukas—was meant to be left out of the picture.

(Time skip to summer vacation)

It was like any other normal bright and warm weekday.  The problem was that it was too warm.  After discussing it through, the Nordics played a quick game.  Two of the losers were to go out and buy ice cream for the entire group.  For the first time in a long time, Matthias cheered as he won the game first.  Then it was a close fight between Berwald and Lukas, which lead to the latter person’s loss.  Emil lost as well.

Lukas stayed the same, silent.  Emil, on the other hand, was not at the least comfortable.  Although he was glad that Lukas didn't keep pestering him to call him 'big brother' (like he usually does), the silence that hung over them was uncomfortable to say the least.

Gratefully, Emil and Lukas entered the nearest ice cream shop.  A bell rang when they entered and they were welcomed by a waitress.  As expected, there were a few people dining in.  Almost all of the tables were taken.  Well, not like they were going to dine-in.  They had to take-out.

As Emil went on and ordered everyone's ice creams, Lukas heard a very familiar voice.  He turned and scanned the tables for that particular person.  It didn’t take long before he did—and he wasn’t happy about it.

“What will you have, Lukas?” Emil said, looking at the menu.

It took only a few more looks for Lukas to be absolutely sure that the person he was looking at was (y/n)’s boyfriend.  He was with a girlthat wasn’t (y/n).

“Hey, Lukas, I’m asking what you’re going to ha—.”  Emil said impatiently.  But when he followed the gaze of his brother, even he couldn’t believe it.  He stared, quickly pulling back his normal expression.

The both of them could hear what the seemingly ‘couple’ were saying.  It made Lukas feel even more and more disgusted.

Lukas ordered something random and so did Emil.  When their orders were completed and paid for, they left the shop immediately.

“Maybe we saw wrong?” Emil suggested.  “Or maybe the girl was some close relative of his?”

“I’d know that face anywhere,” Lukas said coldly.  “And do you really think that he’d call some close relative of his romantic nicknames?”

Even Emil knew that what he was suggesting was something odd.  He sighed,  “Guess not.”  He glanced over to Lukas.  “What are you going to do?”

For a second, Lukas considered the idea of telling (y/n) then he threw it away.  “Nothing,” he said.  “I don’t care.  Whatever happens next is not my fault.”

Emil shuddered at Lukas’ coldness.  He knew more than anybody Lukas' anger.  He took the risk of glancing at his brother before he relaxed as he saw the look in Lukas’ eyes.  The worried look that gave everything away.

After returning to the apartment where the Nordics lived and after finishing the ice cream, the rooms were filled with the sound of the phone ringing.

Tino went and picked it up.  When he replaced the phone back, he immediately announced what the call was about.

“(Y/n) invited us over to her house for a celebration on Saturday night,” Tino beamed.

“Oh yeah,” Emil said.  “It’s her birthday this weekend.”

    “Then let’s go!” Matthias exclaimed.

“How about giving her a birthday present?” Tino suggested.  “We still have three more days to find one.”

“How about we go out tomorrow to find one?”  Matthias said.

A few positive remarks were voiced and everybody was enthusiastic the next day to find the perfect gift to give (y/n).  While the others went around looking at objects and criticizing if it would be good enough to give as a present, Lukas stayed silent.  The group moved over to the stuff toy section of the department store.

Tino picked one pink small teddy bear.  “How about this one?  I’m sure she’d love teddy bears.”

The others sounded an approval but Lukas scoffed at the idea.  “(Y/n) doesn’t like teddy bears that much anymore and she hates the color pink,” he said, without realizing it.

“Then what will she like then?”  Matthias grinned.

“(Y/n) loves (favorite animal).  Any color but pink may do.  Like this one,” he says, picking up a brown (f/animal).  “Or like this one.” He pulled out another (f/animal) of a different color from the stock.

His companions stared at Lukas.  It was expected that out of all of them, Lukas would know more about (y/n) since they were the closest.  However, when the news that (y/n) had a boyfriend reached their ears, they saw evident changes in Lukas’ attitude toward her.  His character became colder and more distant.  Everyone, with an exception of Matthias and a few observations from Emil, thought he stopped caring about her.  But at that moment, they saw the exact opposite.  They saw the Lukas who was in another zone.  A zone they knew he was in only when (y/n) was concerned.

“So which one will you guys go for?” Lukas asked.  “And why are you staring at me?”

They broke their stare and looked at each other.  After a second, they broke into smiles.

“How about we give her a set of the same animal but with different colors?”  Matthias suggested.

After going through the stack of stuff toys, they were able to pull out five different colored (f/animal).  Feeling satisfied, they paid for them and went to get it wrapped.

(Time skip to Saturday)

“You’re finally here!” (y/n) shouted.  “What took you guys so long?  We started a long time ago.”

    “Caught in traffic?”  Matthias smiled.

(Y/n) smiled.  “Well, whatever the excuse, come in.  It’s still hot at this time of the night and good for us, we have air conditioners.”

"Then why wear long-sleeved shirts?" Emil observed.

(Y/n) only smiled.  She waited until everyone entered the house before she closed the door and lead them to the living room.  It was a great night full of jokes, teases, and laughter.  After dinner, everyone circled around (y/n).  One by one, they started giving her birthday presents and one by one she opened them.  When the Nordics gave their present to her, she stared at them.

“Do tell me first that this isn’t one of those kinds of gifts that end up being some kind of prank,” she asks them, cautiously holding the gift in her hands.

“Don’t worry,” Emil said.  “It wasn’t Matthias who thought of the gift.”

“Hey, what was that supposed to mean?” Matthias asked, pretending to be hurt.

(Y/n) laughed.  “Then I guess the gift’s safe,” she said as she started to unwrap it.  She took one peek and then gasped before excitingly removing the rest of the wrapper.  There in a plastic box were the stuff toys.  She slowly and carefully removed them from the box, lining them up in front of her.  “Thank you,” she said, looking at the Nordics.  “I’ve always wanted to have (f/animal) stuff toys.  They’re even in varied colors.  They’re so cute!”

The group smiled at how happy (y/n) was.  Even Lukas had a small smile tugging at his lips.

“Especially this one,” she said, holding up a stuff toy with a color of a shade in between dark blue and violet.

    “Why so?” Tino asked.

“Because it’s the same color as Lukas’ eyes.”

Everyone in the room snapped their heads to take a look at the mentioned person and then back at the stuffed animal.

“She’s right,” one of her friends said.  “The color is similar.”

    “I know right,” (y/n) giggled.

After that, someone else handed her next present and everybody’s attention went back to her.  Little did they know Lukas’ smile had actually widened.

(Time skip: 5 hours later)

Lukas shifted to his side, suddenly annoyed and aware of his phone ringing.  He glanced up at his digital clock and groaned.  Groggily, he reached over his nightstand to get his phone.  He blinked a few times at the brightness of the screen to see who the caller was.  He pressed the call button.

"Do you know what time it is?" Lukas said into the phone.

"Hello to you too Lukas," (y/n) greeted.  "2:30 in the morning?"

"Then why call when it's so early in the morning?"

"The excitement of the party still hasn't left me and I couldn't sleep.  Anyway, you know, I felt like something was missing at the party.  You know what that may be?"

Yeah, he had noticed something or someone was missing.  The moment he entered (y/n)'s house, he scanned the people who were present.  He saw her family, her extended family, her friends from school whom he also knew, and themselves.  But of all the people he had expected to be there, that one person who was missing was.

"Your boyfriend, maybe?" Lukas asked.  He heard shuffling at the other side of the phone.

"Oh...him?  Uh...no.  No, of course not, although I guess it's such a pity he didn't come."

    "Why?"

(Y/n) sighed.  "He...he, uh, said that he and his family went for a vacation abroad."

Uneasiness washed over Lukas.  His hands curled tightly around his phone.  "You don't sound convinced," he finally said.

"Why would you say that?" (Y/n) said, and Lukas could've swore he heard a strain on her voice.  "I'm sure he's out there having funwith his family."

"Or so you hope," Lukas thought.  It felt like (y/n) had an idea on what was happening.

"Anyway," (y/n) continued.  "What was missing from the party was Matthias' and your remarks.  You've been silent most of the time and Matthias hasn't been so loud lately."

"Well, why do you care about whether I'm quiet or not?"

"Okay, ouch," she said, but then laughed a bit.  "I miss your remarkspainful or not."

Lukas smiled at that.  (Y/n) went on and on about other things.  He was mainly the listener, with a few comments and critics here and there.  But it wasn't the only reason why he was quiet most of the time.  He was concerned.  There was something strange mixed in (y/n)'s voice right from when she called.  Lukas knew what it was.  It was a stupid idea to ask why she had cried when he already knew the answer.

His heart squeezed again.  It really pained him to know that (y/n) was hurting.  It even angered him to know that the cause of all this was her cheating boyfriend.  Lukas wished he could be there by (y/n)'s side and give her a comforting hug.  But would she even allow that?

    "Hey, Lukas?" (Y/n) asked.

Lukas noticed caution in her voice.  "What?"

"Would yoube thereno matter what faults I may have?"

Lukas thought about it.  "No," he said.  He heard her breath catch.  "In the first place, you sound like I actually left you or something."

    "Huh?"

Lukas sighed.  "Do I have to spell out everything for you?  I said I've never even left your side, what you said suggested that I left you when I didn't."

There was silence on the other end before "Thank you and uhm, Lukas?"

    "What?"

There was another pause.  "I'm sorry."

    "For what?"

"Certain things.  Recent things.  Anyway, good night Lukas."

    "Yeah, whatever, good morning (y/n)."

    The call ended.

"Morning guys!" Matthias' voice bellowed in the kitchen.

Tino and Emil greeted him back with a 'good morning' of their own while Berwald just grunted.

"Where's Lukas?" Matthias asked, noticing the lack of presence of his friend.

    "Asleep," Emil answered.

"That's unusual," Tino commented.  "He's usually awake earlier than Matthias.  What do you think happened?"

Everyone shrugged.  Later on, they heard the floor creak and saw Lukas entering with a yawn.

"Good morning Lukas!" Matthias immediately exclaimed, breaking the silence.  "What happened to you?  You're usually awake earlier tha."

Lukas pulled on his friends tie again, but not strong enough to choke him.  "Shut up," he said, releasing the tie.

Matthias fixed his tie, "Seriously, what happened to you?"

"I was woken up this morning, that's all."

    "By who?" Tino asked.

    "(Y/n)?" Berwald asked.

Just by that name alone, everybody either lapsed into silence or stopped what they were doing.

Lukas sighed at that.  "Yeah.  (Y/n) called because she said she couldn't sleep because she still felt excited about the party."

"Oh," was the only word that was said.  They knew, however, that it was more than that.  They've lived with Lukas for a long time, they could practically call themselves family.  They had noticed, one time or another, Lukas' feelings for (y/n), which explained the change in his behavior when she got a boyfriend.  They just didn't want to push him about it.

"So guys, what do you want to do today?" Matthias said, trying to clear out the heavy atmosphere that was starting to set in.  But nobody was in the mood.

(Time skip.  A few days later)

Lukas couldn't sleep.  There was an unsettling feeling in his chest.  Something was wrong.  Since the call after (y/n)'s party, she has not contacted him again.  She didn't do that before.  She never made herself so distant before.

He got up from his bed, put on outside clothes and as silent as a cat, he left the apartment. The moment he stepped out of the house, a breeze blew across his face.  Even though it was already almost midnight, the air was still warm.

Whenever he felt uneasy, walking to (y/n)'s house had always eased the feeling he had. So he walked.  Taking his time, he watched as some cats scurried through the alleys.  Sometimes he would look up and see the summer constellations.  When there were dogs, some of them would bark at him.  He was already near (y/n)'s home when, at the playground a few blocks from her house, he heard people.  There were two streetlights that illuminated the place, but it was enough to see who were standing there in the middle of the playground.

    (Y/n) and her boyfriend.

Lukas felt a tug at his heart.  Great.  Exactly what he wanted to see.  "I'd better leave like I didn't see this," he mumbled to himself.  But he couldn't.  He couldn't pull his eyes away from you.  "Leave," he repeats to himself.  His body still doesn't move.  It doesn't react to how it wants it to.  He bites his lower lip.  He had given them their space before, why couldn't he do it now?  "Damn you Lukas, move your feet," he urged.  As if finally complying to his wish, his foot takes a step back.  He closes his eyesthen SLAP!

Lukas opens his eyes, surprise tainting his violet-blue-colored orbs.  He looked over to the couple.  A deep feeling burst out as he watched (Y/n) hold a hand to her wounded cheek.  He didn't think when he ran to (y/n)'s side.  He didn't think when he stood in front of her and caught the boyfriend's hand to stop him from striking (y/n) again.   He didn't think when he almost snapped the wrist he was holding.  He didn't need a reason to think.  He only needed to know that he needed to protect (y/n).  No.  He wanted to protect her.

(B/n) shouted in pain.  Lukas only released his wrist after a while.  The boyfriend shouted more, followed by a string of curses.  "What was that for?"

"For mistreating (y/n)," Lukas coolly answered.  His voice low and threatening.

"What?" (B/n) exclaimed.  He looked at Lukas like he was insane or something.  "What do you care how I handle my girlfriend?  I don't even know you."

Lukas' eyebrow twitched.  A creepy grin nearly crept onto his face.  He had tolerated months of seeing (y/n) together with this poor excuse of a guy.  He had endured the pain and worry he felt for (y/n) when he knew that this good-for-nothing person was cheating on her.  He could laugh at his stupidity.  Lukas sighed, his normal expression back on his face.

"Despite your good looks, it looks like you have poor knowledge on how to take notice of your girlfriend's close friends."

"What are you talking about?  Anyway, you can't tell me what to do.  She's mine first."

Anyone who could have experienced what was happening then would be able to see the tension rise between the two boys.

"That's right," he said.  "Everyone knows that you are her boyfriend.  They can see that you're perfect for each other.  But let me tell you this." For a moment, Lukas' normally cold and blank expression broke and was filled with compassion and love.  "I loved her first."

Those last four words hung in the other.  (Y/n)'s eyes widened when they fell upon her ears.  The boyfriend looked shocked enough.

"I loved her way before we even knew you existed," Lukas went on.  "Nobody's going to change that."

(B/n) was about to say something but Lukas' glare on him, daring him to say anything else, left him unable to.

Lukas grabbed (y/n) by the wrist and they briskly walked away.  When they were far away enough from him, they slowed down.  He turned his attention back to (y/n).  She was gasping for air, so he stopped.  It took minutes for her to regain her breath.  In those minutes, Lukas was able to observe her.

He reached up his hand to move away some hair from (y/n)'s face.  She flinched at the touch but didn't make attempts to move away.  Lukas lifts her face to take a good look at her cheek.  Thankfully it wasn't that red anymore.  His fingers skim down the nape of her neck.  She squirmed until she felt his fingers stop by the base of her neck.  His other hand lightly brushed against her arm.

He swallowed.  This wasn't what he had hoped for (y/n).   "When did it start?" He asked softly.

(Y/n) took a breath in.  She broke her gaze from his.

"When did this start?" He asked again.  Lukas had not seen the wounds on her before.  He felt very stupid for not even noticing the bruises she had on her neck and on her arm.

She bit her lower lip, lowering her head and staring at the floor.

Lukas draws in closer.  "(Y/n)?" He whispers, his voiced laced with concern.  "When?"

    Silence.

"(Y/n), please," his voice almost begging.

(Y/n) knew more than anything that Lukas hated to beg.  Her voice caught in her throat.  "A-a month before th-the start of summer," she started.  "I c-caught himwi-withwith another girl a-and I conI confronted him about it." The tears were coming out now.  She stuttered and willed the words out of her mouth.  "He didn't even try toto cover it up.  Hehe."

That was everything Lukas needed to hear.  He pulled (y/n) into a hug, wrapping her in his arms like he never wanted to let her go again and at the same time like she was fragile, someone too precious to allow to break.

(Y/n)'s hands held onto his back, her fingers gripping his shirt.  She cried into his shoulder, like the old times.  But this was different because now (y/n) knew about how Lukas had loved her.  Had always loved her and Lukas couldn't help but show it.

Her response to this?  Maybe it would take a while but at least he didn't need to hide his feelings anymore.

    . . .

Finally, this took quite some time.  There were a lot of distractions but now I've finished it.

And yes, I know, it's kind of dragging, isn't it?  I've noticed that in most of my stories.

Still, if you've reached the end of this, then I hope you've enjoyed it.
